Espresso Martini – Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

Espresso MartiniThis pistol packing martini goes way back for us!  One evening, 10+ years ago, David and I were wandering around downtown and The Bitter End caught our attention. Fun name and a beautiful building so we decided to pop in. The Bitter End was located in the oldest building in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter and had lots of personality and charm. I say was because it is no longer open. We bellied up to the bar and ordered a “Black Martini” I think it was called and we loved it! Weeks later, craving more of this powerful potion, we went to our laboratory and began to mix up versions of the martini from our fuzzy memory.

And the tradition began! Our friends Kathy and Brandon would drive down from Orange County several times a year for a festive weekend poolside. To dodge the horrific traffic migrating south to San Diego for the weekend, they would get a late start and arrive for nightcaps and laughs to kick the weekend off. I made kiddie cocktails for Kyle and Julie and the Espresso Martini (mine is with decaf or else I’m up all weekend!!) as the adult beverage and a tasty little dessert. As if this wasn’t dessert enough! Always looked forward to and now expected!

The Espresso Martini then become their official ski week planning cocktail with another group of friends. I am so happy we could provide the cocktail to fuel their planning fun!

Years later this drink still lives on even though The Bitter End came to, shall we say…..a bitter end.

Ingredients:

1 oz cold coffee

1 1/2 oz Absolute Vodka

1 1/2 oz Kahlua coffee liqueur

2 oz Heavy Whipping cream

Splash of vanilla

Pinch of powdered sugar

Methode:

Pour ingredients except for the heavy cream into a shaker can filed with ice. Shake well until very chilled. Strain into a chilled martini glass.

Pour heavy cream into a small bowl and whisk until cream just begins to thicken. Add vanilla and sugar to slightly sweeten whipped cream. Consistency should be thickened but easy to float on top of the espresso martini without it sinking into the drink.

I love it!!!! What a great walk down memory lane! I can picture us sitting in the family room with our cocktails on a Friday night. Sipping in the coffee flavored martini combined with the perfect layer of cream floating on top is what really makes this cocktail special ~ what a great way to kick off the weekend!
