It was like a time warp….how could our Alma mater have changed so much and we had not…..or had we? My long time friend and college roommate Kathy and I took a walk down memory lane and visited the campus of San Diego State University, the scene of our “higher learning”. We learned about life, we learned about boys and more than anything we learned amazing things about ourselves. This was the beginning of knowing what we were capable of doing and bringing to the world.
The one change that struck me the most was the remains of Aztec Bowl. By the time we attend SDSU our football team was playing at Jack Murphy Stadium (another change) like the Pros and the Aztec Bowl was used for rugby games, concerts and graduation ceremonies. I felt like a Roman gladiator that had been shot, fast forward, in time to see the ruins of a former coliseum where a now modern sports arena had been built (the home of Aztec Basketball at Viejas Arena) It was nostalgic and comforting to see the place where we had cavorted with the rugby team and tossed our caps into the air at the Commencement Ceremony remain for all to see into the future. I was so happy to see that if had not just been wiped away, never to be seen again.
Besides the higher learning we did on campus there was much to be learned within the Greek system of the fraternity houses. After some research, Kathy and I made a decision that we only had so much time so why join a group of girls in a sorority when we could cut to the chase and be Little Sisters at a fraternity! Some of the nicest guys we met our first few days on campus were from the Delta Upsilon (DU) House. We checked out the other fraternities and they just didn’t match us like these guys did. So we joined the ranks of the DU Sisterhood and had the time of our lives. The DU’s were affectionately called the Ducks and we had the Duck Pond to partake in adult beverages every Friday, TGIF! The original house that overlooked the playing fields no longer exists (condemnation of the old frat houses and old ways took over after we left) but we did find the new, smaller DU house and were thrilled to see that DU life does still exist on campus for future Ducks to enjoy!
Another highlight of our campus tour was to meet up with my friend Chef Dave McHugh, the Executive Chef at the Faculty Staff Club. He put me to “work” in the Herb Garden and then showed us around the dining room and Mediterranean style patio. Thanks for lunch Chef! I’ll “work” in your garden anytime!
There are historic pictures of the old building that is now the Faculty Staff Club from 1931 and of Kennedy in 1963 at Aztec Bowl (San Diego State College as it was called then) where he made the commencement address and was awarded the first Doctorate Degree in the California State College System.
Chef Dave is not only the Executive Chef at SUSD but he teaches the Wines Around the World course at Grossmont College at night. I have to highly recommend his course if you have ever wanted to learn more about every aspect of wine growing and tasting!
So many memories lightly touched upon, shared by two friends as only they could. Michele and Kathy’s Most Excellent Adventure! It was a beautiful day!
This was an interesting article. I'm sure a lot of SDSU alumni are impressed with all the improvements they've made.
