Marsala Tiramisu

By now, pretty much everyone knows Tiramisu means “pick me up” because of the chocolate and espresso in this heavenly dessert. Or is it because it tastes so incredibly good you could just swoon and need to ask, “Could you pick me up off the floor, please?” Either way, there is not another dessert around like it. Did you know it is not someones Italian great grandmother’s recipe either? Tiramisu was created in the 1970’s and has exploded upon the world making it one of the most requested desserts!

Chocolate Espresso Cake

Gravestone Cake

As my mother-in-law Jeanne likes to say, “Old Age is not for Sissies!” And she is right! She’s a feisty lady in her mid eighties who’s still having a great time! She is involved in so many activities we practically have to make an appointment to talk with her! Jeanne runs the weekly movie theatre where she lives, still goes to the gym, is always heading up some kind of a committee to help others and is inspiration to all who know her. Age is a state of mind so if the mind and heart are happy, then who cares what the age is. They say “laughter is the best medicine” so why not poke fun at whatever age we are and keep the laughter coming! Continue reading

Orange Flan with Spiced Caramel Sauce

Flan has been around as far back as the Roman Empire. Back then, most versions of flan were savory rather than sweet. In Roman times, flan was considered to be a health food and believed to soothe the chest, aid the kidneys and liver, increase fertility, and reduce urinary tract infections. But it is the sweet dessert flan of Mexico most people are familiar with and love! Did I mention my husband is crazy about flan? He says he’s feeling kind of flan-ish if he’s gone too long without some flan! Continue reading

Chocolate Margarita Martini – Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

Is chocolate a French creation? Belgium? Mexican? Oh yes it was the Aztecs and Montezuma who figured out how to process the hard little cacao bean into a drink that was believed to give strength, courage, and wisdom to all who drank it. It was also believed to posses rare aphrodisiac powers. Montezuma would have 50 gold goblets full of his beloved chocolate drink each day before he’d make the nightly visits to his harem. A drink surely fit for the gods! Continue reading

All American Chocolate Chip Cookie Cupcakes

Happy Birthday America! What’s a birthday party without cupcakes? My friend Terese and I were talking about sweet treats the other day and she told me about her favorite cupcakes. They have a cookie dough center! A cookie and a cupcake….now that’s a party! Continue reading

Chocolate Chip Banana Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Frosting

Our godchild Julie just graduated from high school! Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday we would wrestle about and giggle for an hour as we put the sheets and blankets on…and off…and on…our guest bed. Luckily we always visited on a weekend or mom would have whacked me for winding up the child right before bed! Or the times she would drape herself over me in a big chair and we would discuss “our needs” and dreams. And yes, all those “turtle snap kisses” she loved to give us! This funny little girl with the quirky sense of humor has grown into a beautiful young lady and we are so proud of her!  Continue reading

Greek Yogurt Cheesecake with Raspberries and Pistachios

Happy Anniversary to my sweetie! And my sweetie has a sweet tooth, or two and I’m a savory character. Our philosophy is to always put each other first and do what makes the other happy and if you do, you will both get what you want out of life and the marriage.

With that in mind I wanted to make a dessert for us that was not too sweet and not too savory. One that was just right. I think this one does just that! Anyway, it surely made us happy!  Continue reading

Turtle Dove Brownies

Oh my, oh my! If you want to win your true love’s heart, this is an excellent way to start! We all know that brownies are fantastic on their own but when you marry them with salted caramel, nuts and more chocolate you will be able to ask for just about anything you want from your sweetie. Small bites…don’t get carried away or he will be in a sugar coma and you won’t get what your little heart has been desiring. Continue reading

Amaretto Cheesecake Flan

Sweeten up your Cinco de Mayo party! My husband absolutely adores flan! I have made the traditional kind for him so many times that I thought I’d add a little twist to it this year. This is a firmer flan that resembles the kind my friend Kathy makes from her Portuguese grandmother’s recipe. And I say anything with a little alcohol added to it has to be a winner! Continue reading
