Captain Dave Cocktail – Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

Captured by the Pirate Captain!

Sir Admiral Henry Morgan was one of the most notorious and successful privateers from Wales, as well as one of the most dangerous pirates to terrorize the Spanish Main. He had the audacity to steal from the English, while sporting their cause at the same time!

He was also one of the few pirates able to retire from piracy, with most of his wealth intact and little legal retribution, to ultimately become the Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. Now several centuries later, he has become the figurehead for the company he helped to make famous….The Captain Morgan Rum Company. Continue reading

Greek Mojito ~ Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

Greek Mojito

“Mojito,” means “to cast a little spell,” and originated in Cuba. These drinks have become so popular that all kinds of twists to the original are popping up. The Greek spin on the cocktail is made with Metaxa, a Muscat-sweetened brandy, instead of rum.

Adjust the sugar and lime juice depending on how sweet or tart you like your Mojitos. Go Greek!

Perfect Mai Tai – Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

Perfect Mai Tai

Pitcher-perfect cocktails make for a very happy, Happy Hour! What a great way to relax and enjoy when the cocktails just keep flowing. Memorial Day weekend parties and BBQ’s are the perfect venue for a pitcher of your favorite cocktail.

Most cocktails can be adapted to a pitcher but ones without sodas tend to work best. One of our favorites is a Mai Tai because it reminds us of warm Hawaiian breezes caressing our bodies while lying on the beach, being served our cocktail beneath the shade of a palapa. Can you hear the waves lapping and the Hawaiian music yet? Continue reading

Yellow Bird Cocktail – Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

Yellow Bird Cocktail
“Yellow Bird, up high in banana tree. Yellow Bird, you sit all alone like me”, or so the song goes. You won’t be alone for long when you serve up this cheerful cocktail!
Similar to a Screwdriver, the Yellow Bird replaces the vodka with two types of rum. As an extra treat, there is a little Galliano for extra flavor.

French Connection Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

French Connection Cocktail

The French Connection is a classic cocktail that can be served 3 ways. The warm, nutty flavors are delicious any way you choose to drink them. Whether you serve it on the rocks, neat in a snifter or in a mug of hot coffee topped with whipped cream, you will feel the warmth penetrate your body and take the chill right off. The French Connection is a relatively simple drink but don’t let that fool you into thinking that you are about to have an ordinary experience.

Partridge in a Peartini ~ Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

On the first day of Christmas my true love made with me, a Partridge in a Pear-tini. My husband and I like to experiment with new flavors for cocktails and came up with this festive holiday drink. All the seasonal flavors of winter like citrus, pears and almonds come through as you smell and then sip our pear martini. The chipotle sugar rim adds a hint of heat that “pears” nicely with the clean fruit flavors. The rosemary sprig represents the partridge tail and teases the senses with each sip. So much going on, just like the holidays, but with a calmer satisfaction! Happy Holidays!

Smashing Pumpkin Cocktail ~ Friday’s 5 o’clock Wet Your Whistle Call!

Smashing Pumpkin Cocktail

Smashing Pumpkin Cocktail at the US Grant Hotel

While taking a break from gearing up for the Thanksgiving festivities, my husband David and I caught an episode of the Food Networks “Best Thing I Ever Ate/Drank”.

When Troy Johnson, Senior Editor of Riviera Magazine, profiled a cocktail from the US Grant Hotel, right here in downtown San Diego, we looked at each other and said, “We have to try this!” Entertaining at home is fun and has its benefits but sometimes you just have to get out and feel the energy of the city, especially at the holidays.
